Bastrop High School Football Game Details
Bastrop loses to Mesquite Poteet 42-35 - Saturday, December 4, 2010
Waco ISD Stadium
Bastrop - 35
Mesquite Poteet - 42

Six Hundred and 21 yards of offense was not enough to bring the Bastrop Bears a victory against Mesquite Poteet as the Bears lost to the Pirates 42-35 in their 4A division II quarter final matchup in the Waco ISD Stadium. After the Bears took over at the Pirate 41, Josiah Monroe's short pass was intercepted and shortly after the Pirates scored on a pass from Beau Nowell to Chase Graham. The 58 yd play gave the Pirates a 7-0 lead in the 1st Q. The Pirates scored again in the 1st quarter on a 39 yd pass from Nowell to Courtland Crumby. This ended the first period with Poteet ahead 14-0. There was no additional scoring in the 1st half. But errors continued to hurt the Bears as they turned the ball over three times in the half and failed on three 4th down attempts in Poteet territory. The game became a scoring match in the 2nd half when each team scored 3 TD in the 3rd period. First Marcus Reed scored on an 8 yd run to bring the score to 14-7. Nowell then passed 12 yds to Crumby and the lead was 21-7. Monroe's 6 yd td pass to Trae Bunton had the Bears trailing 21-14. Nowell tossed a 55 yd td pass to Steven Hicks to up the Pirate lead to 28-14 but Monroe passed to Robert Nunn for a 15 yd score and the lead changed to 28-21. Hicks closed the 3 Q scoring on a 1 yd run and the Q ended with Poteet leading 35-21. In the 4th Q Monroe scored from 2 yds out but the conversion failed and Poteet led 35-27. After stopping Poteet, Monroe passed 16 yd to Mason Foytik, and passed again to Foytik for a 2 pt conversion and the score was tied 35-35 with 5:35 left to play in the game. But Bastrop did not stop Poteet on their next drive, and on a 5 play drive Hicks scored on a 13 yd run and Poteet led 42-35.Monroe moved Bastrop in position for a tying score at the Poteet 35, but the Bears' progress was hurt by a personal foul penalty that pushed them back to the 50. That led to a fourth-and-11 from the Pirates 36, but when Monroe tried to scramble for another first down, Poteet defensive end Paul Kamanda tripped him up in the backfield with 2:38 minutes left. The Bears could not get the ball back in the time remaining and Poteet won 42-35. In Monroe's final game, he passed for 458 yards and ran for 118 yards and 4 touchdowns. Bastrop led in 1st downs 32-17, passing yds 456-349, and rushing yds 165-116. Robert Nunn had 178 receivng yards for Bastrop. Nowell passed 349 yds for Poteet. Bastrop ended this exciting season with a record of 10 wins and four losses.
