Bastrop Beats Frisco Liberty to Advance in Playoffs!


The Bastrop Bears felt at home at Cowboy Stadium in Arlington and handed Frisco Liberty its first loss 38-24 in a Class 4A Division II Regional playoff game. With Bastrop getting the ball to start the game, Josiah Monroe led a 4 play drive for a touchdown when he connected with Robert Nunn on a 24 yard pass. Frisco Liberty then scored in five plays when Jay Ajayi scored on a 34 yard run. Monroe then led an 8 play drive with a 38 yard run and then scored on a 2 yard touchdown and the Bears led 14-7 at the end of the 1st Q. Liberty was on the Bears 1 yard line to start the 2nd Q but was turned back on 4th down when Paul Whitmill forced Ajayi to fumble. Later Connor Hirt kicked a 27 yd FG to bring the score to 14-10 in favor of the Bears. With 1:55 left in the half, Monroe hit Mason Foytik with a 21 yard touchdown pass and the half ended 21-10 Bastrop leading. Zach Smith passed to Malcolm Hill for a 44 yd TD and Bastrop's lead was now 21-17. Bastrop drove from its 29 yd line to the Liberty 42. Then Monroe passed to Nunn for 33 yards but Nunn fumbled and the ball crossed the goal line with a Liberty player chasing it but Nunn was able to gather it in for the touchdown. The Bears led 28-17. Later David Smith intercepted a Monroe pass and scored on a 65 yd return and Bastrop led 28-24 at the end of the 3rd Q. Bastrop did all the scoring in the 4th Q with a 26 yd FG by Hart McMillan and a 16 yd run by Monroe and the game ended with a Bear victory 38-24. Monroe passed for 302 yds, ran for 111 yds and four touchdowns. Foytik had 10 receptions for 185 yds, both season highs.
