Bastrop High School Football Game Details
Bastrop Vs. Uvalde - Saturday, November 24, 2001
Alamo Heights' Orem Stadium, San Antonio, Texas
Uvalde - 6
Bastrop - 28

Class 4A Division II, Second Round

Robert Smith rushed for 169 yards, including a 70-yard touchdown on the first play from scrimmage, and teammate Rashon Ward ran for three scores as Bastrop cruised to a comfortable 28-6 victory over Uvalde on Saturday in the second round of the Class 4A Division II playoffs. The Bears (8-4), who forced five turnovers and thwarted a pair of fourth-down tries at Alamo Heights' Orem Stadium, limited the Coyotes (9-2) to one first down in the first half as in taking a 28-0 lead. Uvalde showed signs of life, getting a 2-yard touchdown run from Joey Gonzales on its first drive of the second half, but was unable to make a bigger push. Bastrop advances to play Beeville (10-1), a 45-20 winner over Sharyland, next week in the third round. "You have to give all the credit to them," Uvalde coach Juan Hinojosa said. "Defensively, they played real tough. They were a lot better football team than they looked on film. They took it to us from the get-go." While Hinojosa made no excuses, Bastrop coach David Halbrook said he anticipated the Coyotes might come out flat after a shocking 21-20 upset of Kerrville Tivy in the first round. "It's hard even for professionals to get up after you have a really emotional game the week before, so we felt the first quarter was the key," Halbrook said. "We felt if we could get off to a good start, we'd be able to hang in there with them." Halbrook got his wish on the very first play, when Smith broke a few tackles at the line of scrimmage and raced free for a 70-yard score. The touchdown set the tone for a half in which the Bears almost totally dominated, holding Uvalde to only 43 yards of total offense. As the Coyotes sputtered, Bastrop bumped its lead to 28 points on 15-, 2- and 7-yard scoring runs from Ward, who had 94 yards on 16 carries. The latter two scores came after the Bears stopped fourth-down tries at the Uvalde 37 and midfield. Bastrop could have tacked on another score, but Uvalde's Gonzales intercepted a pass in the end zone with less than a minute remaining in the half. Gonzales also sparked Uvalde's only touchdown drive, rushing for 59 of 68 yards, including the 2-yard capper, as the Coyotes cut the deficit to 22 points. "We always knew coming back from 28 points would be tough," Hinojosa said. "But we also know the character of our kids. I knew they were going to come back in the second half and play hard." Adam Meuth, Ox Monroe and Armies Jackson had interceptions for Bastrop, and Justin Bylined and Donnie Nicholson recovered fumbles.
