Bastrop County Relay For Life 2001 - Page 1 The purpose of the Relay for Life is to celebrate survivorship. It is a team event to fight cancer! This year it was held May 11 and 12 at Bastrop High School's Erhard Field. This is the 4th annual celebration and remembrance. This event is made up entirely of volunteers and benefits the American Cancer Society and the Bastrop unit. There are walking, running, camping out, games, and entertainment-but mostly it is to honor the survivors of cancer and remember those who have lost their fight with cancer. Money raised goes to cancer research.
Relay for Life co-chairs for 2001 were Lori Chapin and Jane Sanders.
"Our Wall of Life was created to honor every survivor who has participated in the Relay for Life. Last year we started with 136 bricks, and this year we have 192 bricks. Seven of our valiant ones lost their struggle during this last year. Their names are no longer on our Wall of Life, but have been entered into the wonderful Book of Life."
5000 luminaries circle the entire football field. During the luminary ceremony, the lights at the football field are turned off and candles are lit in each luminary. Each luminary is a memorial or honors a survivor and helps raise funds in the fight against cancer. It takes many groups, individuals, special sponsors and organizations working together to raise the dollars needed in the fight against cancer!
