The Bastrop Bears lost their season’s opener to Vista Ridge by a score of 35-6. Vista Ridge’s JD Hill took a handoff 66 yards scoring on the 1st play from scrimmage. The 7-0 score came in the first 19 seconds of the 1st quarter. On a 12- play 75 yard drive by Bastrop, the Bears scored on a 2 yard run by quarterback Cameron Barron. The point after failed and the Bears trailed by 7-6. Barron completed 6 passes in the almost 10 minute drive. 1st quarter ended 7-6, but Vista Ridge quickly scored early in the 2nd quarter going ahead 14-6. A Bear fumble deep in their own territory gave the Rangers another score and the half ended 21-6. The Bears held the Rangers under 100 yards afterwards, but 2 turnovers by Bastrop deep in their own territory gave Vista Ridge two more scores giving them a 35-6 victory. The Bears had several opportunities in the 2nd half but were stopped twice inside the Ranger 10 yard line. An intercepted pass by Romello Wilson gave the Bears the ball on the VR 49. A 35 yard run by Carrrington Waites and two pass completions to Logan Allen and Dior Smith put the Bears inside the 10. Then a Jaime Gills blocked punt gave the Bears the ball on the Ranger 7, but neither would result in any points. Vista Ridge’s Stedman Mayberry had 2 touchdowns and 187 yards rushing. Bastrop’s Barron passed for 79 yards and completed 9 out of 18 passes. Waites led Bastrop rushers with 51 yards on 11 carries.
