Bears lose 1st District game 23-15!


The Bastrop Bears lost their first District game to the New Braunfels Unicorns 23-15 at Erhard Field. The Bears played without their leading rusher, Rashon Ward and his replacement, Jason Goertz who was injured in the last quarter of last week’s game. The Unicorns scored first when they recovered a fumbled punt return on the Bastrop one yard line early in the first quarter. The point after was no good. The Bears then went on a nine play 69 yard drive, with Ricky Lincoln scoring from the one. The extra point by Kevin Klaus was good and Bastrop took the lead 7-6. In the second quarter the Unicorns marched from their 28, but had to settle for a 26 yard field goal. With seconds left in the half Bastrop scored after recovering the ball on the Unicorn 3 yard line after the ball was snapped over the punters head. A two point conversion was good and the half ended with Bastrop ahead 15-9. The third period was scoreless, but the New Braunfels offense took over in the fourth quarter and scored on a 38 yard pass and finally on an 18 yard run. The final score was 23-15. The Bears lost 4 fumbles and had 3 passes intercepted. The Unicorns out gained the Bears 199-114 rushing, 152-73 passing, and total yards of 351-187. The Bears will meet Del Valle next Friday in Del Valle in an important District game.
